Steps in Mohr’s Circle
This is graphical method in which we can find principal stresses and planes easily.
(Note: If shear stress q is not given then find center of AB and name it as C. It is center of Mohr’s Circle.)
(Note: If shear stress q is not given then point A and B consider as P and Q.)
Steps in Mohr’s Circle
Step - 1
Choose suitable scale and point origin O of X and Y-axis.
Step - 2
Point the σx and σy on X- axis as point A and B. If this stresses are tensile then point it on +ve X-axis. And if compressive point it on –ve X-axis.
Step - 3
Plot the shear stress q from point A and B in +ve Y-axis and –ve Y-axis respectively. Name this point as
D and E respectively. (Note: If shear stress q is not given then find center of AB and name it as C. It is center of Mohr’s Circle.)
Step - 4
Joint the point D and E and find the center. Name it as C. It is center of Mohr’s Circle.
Step - 5
Take C as center and DC as radius draw a circle.
Step - 6
Name points as P and Q where circle intersect at X-axis.(Note: If shear stress q is not given then point A and B consider as P and Q.)
Finding stress on given plane
Suppose we have to find out stress on given plane θ then double it i.e. 2θ.
Step - 1
Draw line CM with angle 2θ form CE.
Step - 2
Draw MN perpendicular to X-axis. Which show tangential stress on inclined plane σt.
Step - 3
Draw line passing through origin O and M point i.e. line OM. Which show normal stress on inclined plane σn.
