Resultant Stresses (σr)

The resultant stresses are algebraic sum of direct and bending stress. These are developed at the extreme fiber of column cross section.

It denoted as ‘σ_r’.

$\sigma_{r}=\sigma_{0}\pm\sigma_{b}$

The maximum value of resultant stress is called as maximum stress.

$\sigma_{max}=\sigma_{0}+\sigma_{b}$

The minimum value of resultant stress is called as minimum stress.

$\sigma_{min}=\sigma_{0}-\sigma_{b}$
