What are building Tiles?
- They are made from better grade brick-clays.
- In building constructions they are used for roofing, flooring, paving, wall cladding and for drains.
- Tiles used for roofing are plain in nature or some time curved, while flooring tiles are flat.
- They are rectangular or hexagonal in shape. But now-a-days they are available in various shapes.
What are the flooring tiles?
- Flooring tiles are generally used for flooring purpose as well as ceiling.
- They are flat with thickness 15 to 45mm.
- They are very hard.
- It has very good resistance against wear.
- It produced in various colours.
- In market they are available in following forms.
Hollow clay flooring tiles, ceramic unglazed and
glazed tiles, vitrified tiles, etc.
What are the roofing tiles?
- The tiles which are used for roofing purpose are called roofing tiles.
- In case of pitched roof the covering material used for roof top is called roofing tile.
- Roofing tiles are generally light in weight.
- It available in both shapes i.e. flat and curved.
What are the characteristics of good tile?
- Tile should not have any crake or any bend other than bend given in factory.
- It should be well burnt, dense, compact, regular in size and shape.
- It should resist wear and tear against natural forces.
- It should be easy to fix.
- It should be light in weight.
- It should waterproof, chemical proof, weather proof and fire proof.
- It should be economical and easily available in market.
What are different types of tile according to material used?
- Burnt clay tiles: These types of tiles are made from clay. Mangalore tiles are the best example of this type of tiles.
- Concrete tiles: These types of tiles are made from concrete. Paving blocks are the best example of this type of tiles.
- Plastic tiles: These types of tiles are made from plastic. Roofing plastic sheets are the best example of this type of tiles
- Glass tiles: These types of tiles are made from glass. Roofing glass sheets are the best example of this type of tiles.

- Ceiling tiles: They are manufactured at Chennai, Bengaluru etc.
- They are flat in nature and available at red to white in colour.
- In size it 300m in length and 10mm in thickness.

- Allahabad tiles: they made from selected clay which is moulded under pressure in machine and burnt. The standard dimensions – Length: 290mm to 390mm Width: 90mm to 190mm

- Mangalore tiles: They are clay tiles. They are manufactured in Mangalore, Valsad and Surat. Generally it is flat in nature with some projection to interlocking each other. The standard dimensions are given as below-
