What is veneer?

It is thin slice or sheet of wood of superior or good quality.

Thickness varies from 0.4mm to 6mm.
·
They are obtained by cutting of wood by sharp knife of rotary cutter as
shown in fig.
·
After cutting it is dried in furnaces for removing moisture contain.
·
The Indian timbers which are suitable for veneer are oak, teak, sissoo,
rosewood, etc.
·
The process of making of veneer is called veneering.
What are the properties of Veneer?

It has high tensile strength.
·
It has best property of adhesion with timber.
·
It has low specific gravity.
·
It has high resistance against moisture.
What are uses of Veneer?
1. For making plywood.
2. For making particle boards.
3. For making sunmica.
4. For decoration purpose.
What is plywood?

It is artificial wood which is formed by gluing together thin sheets of
veneer.
·
The sheets are placed in such a way that, grains of one layer are at
right angle to the other.
·
As a result load and movement in both directions become reduced.
·
The outer plies are decorative in nature and called face piles.
·
Internal plies are called core plies.
·
During manufacturing various layers are glued toether by suitable
adhesive and pressed under pressure of 80 to 160 kg/cm2.
·
Commercial forms of plywood are batter board, metal faced plywood, three-plywood.
What are the properties of Plywood?

Light in weight.
·
Meany times stronger than natural wood with same thickness.
·
Free from defects, cracks, bends, etc.
·
It available in any sizes.
·
Moment due to change in moisture are negligible.
What are uses of Plywood?
1. For false ceilings for
interior designing.
2. For manufacturing door and
windows.
3. For furniture.
4. As a partitions between two
rooms.
5. Railway coaches.
6. For formwork of concrete.
What is particle board?
·
It is board which is produced by mixing of particles of low quality
wood and adhesive of high quality under compression of high pressure.
·
Quality of particle board is depends on quality of adhesive and
particle shape.
·
It is much weaker than plywood due to adhesive joints between
particles.
·
These are good fined than other type of wood.
What are the advantages of particle boards?

It is eco friendly.
·
Less costly as compared to plywood.
·
It may be used as flooring material before lay carpet.

It cannot use as structural support.
