-: Finishing Materials (Paint, Distemper and Varnish):-
What is paint? Or Define paint.
Paint is mechanical mixture of base pigments, vehicle or binder, solvent or thinner, drier and colour pigments.
  • Base pigments: it used in paints to from bulk of paint. It gives durability and protection to the painted surface.
  • Vehicle or binder: it facilitates the binding power of paint to the wall.
  • Solvent or thinner: it used in paints to reduce the viscosity of paint.
  • Drier: it used in paints to accelerate the setting time of the paint.
  • Colour pigments: it used to get required colour shade.

What are the types of paints?
Oil paint, water paint, cement paint, aluminium paint, plastic paint, elastic paint, etc.

What are the properties of paints? Or What are the requirement of good paint?

i. It should have high holding power to the surface.
ii. It should able to resist the atmospheric forces.
iii. It should be washable.
iv. It should be available in required colour shade.
v. It should resist the corrosion when applied on metal.
vi. It should produce glossy film.
v. It should not crack, shrink.

What are the uses of paint?

i. To cover the metal and protect form the corrosion.
ii. To increase durability of wall or metal.
iii. To provide good appearance.
iv. To make wall water proof.
v. To avoid dampness in wall.

What is distemper? Or Define distemper.
It is mixture of chalk powder, coloured pigments, glue and water.
  • It is also called as water colour.
  • It used as substitute for white washing.
What are the types of distemper?
White distemper, coloured distemper, dry distemper, oil bound distemper.

What are the properties of distemper?

i. They give smooth appearance.
ii. It is durable.
iii. Cheaper than paints.
iv. It affected by atmosphere when used for external walls.

What are the uses of distemper?
i. To cover the internal wall of building.
ii. For low cost housing.

What is varnish? Or Define varnish.
It is defined as the colloidal solution of synthetic or natural resin in oil or thinner or in both.

What are the properties of varnish?

i. When it applied on surface it produces the transparent film.
ii. Viscosity is depends on thinner.
iii. When only thinner is used as a solvent the film dries by evaporation.
iv. It does not have any colour shade.

What are the types of varnish?

There are 2 basic types of varnish as below.
  • Spirit varnish,
  • Oil varnish.
i. Short, ii. Medium, iii. Long.
It classify based on drying as below.
  • Air dry varnish,
  • Heating or baking
  • varnish.
What are the uses of distemper?

i. Protect tiles from corrosion.
ii. Providing coat for painted surface.
iii. Improve appearance.
iv. Improve damp proofing property.

v. Avoid attack of termite on timber.

Differentiate between paint and varnish.
