Finishing Materials (Mortar)

-: Finishing Materials (Mortar):-
What are plastering materials? Or Define mortar.
It is past formed by mixing together some binding material like cement or lime, some inert material like sand, artificial sand, surkhi and lubricating as water is called mortar.
State various types of mortar.
Cement mortar, lime mortar, cement lime mortar, mud mortar, special mortar.
Give properties of mortar, situation where it will use and proportion of it.
Cement mortar:
  • It is mixture of cement, sand and water with proportion 1:3 to 1:6 depending up on nature and important of work.
  • In 1:3 proportion if we take 1part of cement then take sand 3 times of cement, similarly for 1:6 if we take 1kg cement then take 6kg sand.
Properties:
i. It has high strength.
ii. It has good water proofing property.
iii. It has good fire resisting property.
iv. It has good binding power.
v. Initial setting time of mortar is more.
 Uses:
i. It used as binding material in brick and stone masonry.
ii. It used for plastering work.
iii. It used for filling the creaks during maintenance work.
iv. For flooring.

Lime mortar:
  • It is mixture of lime, sand and water with proportion 1:2 to 1:3 depending up on nature and important of work.
  • In 1:2 proportion if we take 1part of lime then take sand 2 times of lime, similarly for 1:3 if we take 1kg lime then take 3kg sand.
Properties:
i. It has medium strength.
ii. It has high plasticity.
iii. It has low shrinkage coefficient.
iv. It is water proof.
v. It is cheaper than cement mortar.
vi. It has good temperature resistance.
Uses:
i. It used as binding material in brick and stone masonry.
ii. It used for plastering work.
iii. It used for construction of furnaces.

Cement-Lime mortar:
  • It is mixture of cement, lime, sand and water with proportions 1:1:6 to 1:1:8 depending up on nature and important of work.
  • In 1:1:6 proportions if we take 1part of cement, 1part of lime then take sand 6 times of cement, similarly for 1:1:8 if we take 1kg cement, 1kg lime then take 8kg sand.
Properties:
i. It has good strength.
ii. It has high plasticity.
iii. It is water proof.
iv. It has good temperature resistance.
v. it posses properties of cement mortar and lime mortar.
Uses:
i. It used as binding material in brick and stone masonry.
ii. It used for plastering work.
iii. It used for construction of furnaces.

Mud mortar:
  • It is mixture of soil, water and some other natural raw materials like animal waste, natural pigments, etc.
Properties:
i. It is very cheap type of mortar.
ii. Eco friendly.
iii. Easy to apply.
iv. Good fire resistant and sound insulating.
Uses:
i. It maximally used in village areas.
ii. For low cost housing.
iii. Some time it may be used for masonry work.
iv. For plastering work.

Special mortar:
  • It is mortar which is made for special purpose.
  • It same as common cement mortar but its properties are improved by adding some special materials like add mixture, chemicals, pigments, etc.
  • Its proportion is depends on add mixture added. For hydraulic insulating plaster it is 1:2.5 to 1:3.5
Properties:
i. It has special quality.
ii. It prepared for special work.
iii. It required special materials.
iv. It is too costly.
Uses:
i. Improve fire proofing property of material.
ii. Improve water proofing property of material.
iii. Improve appearance or decoration.
iv. Improve strength of material.
