Resultant Stress

In above fig. 3 ‘σ_n’ is the normal stress acting on inclined plane BE and‘σ_t’ is the tangential stress acting on same plane. Then resultant of normal and tangential stress is called as ‘Resultant Stress’.
It is denoted by ‘σ_r’.
The force diagrams of this two stresses are shown in fig. 4.
