Eccentricity (e)

The distance between axis of member and point of application of load is called as ‘Eccentricity’.
It is denoted by ‘e’.
In fig.1.a column is subjected to load ‘P’ at the center of column (long the axis of member) therefore eccentricity equals to zero. In this case column is subjected to direct stress only.
In fig.1.b column is subjected to load ‘P’ at away from the center of column (does not long the axis of member) therefore distance between center of column and point of application of load is called eccentricity ‘e’.
Eccentric distance form X axis denoted as ‘ex’ and eccentric distance form Y axis denoted as ‘ey’.

In this case(fig.1.b) column is subjected to direct stress and bending stress.
