Direct Stresses (σo)
In a above fig.1 a column is subject to a point load P at the center of column. This causes direct compressive stress due to its compressive nature. If it is pulling nature it causes direct tensile stress. The intensity of this stress is uniform throughout the cross section of column.
When a column
subjected to load along the axis of member (axial loading) called direct
loading and stresses developed due to direct loading are called ‘Direct Stresses’.
It is denoted by ‘σo’
Simple
stress is direct stress. i.e.
